Enmind Infusion Pump

Hello – I’m Beth! Vet Directs account manager for the South West. I firstly want to introduce myself before going on to discuss the topic of infusion pumps.

I come from a human sports medicine and orthopaedic background, meaning I am still learning a lot about the world of veterinary. However I have grown up with a passion for animals of all kinds (mainly dogs and horses) and love everything about the veterinary and animal health industry.

Now that you know a little bit more about myself, I want to introduce you to probably my most favourite bit of kit Vet Direct currently supply – The Enmind Infusion Pump. A lot of you might think ‘ah it’s just a drip pump’ ‘they all do the same thing’. Which at first, when I learnt about drip pumps I too thought the same. It is hard to describe the excitement because actually there is so much more to it.

Not only is it extremely lightweight and portable (only weighing 1.5k, which if you think is less that a bag of sugar that is pretty cool!), it also runs off a 10 hour battery life when fully charged.

There are two optional fittings for this pump along with a ‘flip-up’ handle, which in my experience has been a huge benefit for practices. From the pictures below you can see a screw style fitting – handy when attaching to drip stands – or a metal bracket style fitting which of course fits nicely onto kennel doors. What I have tried to show you from the photos below is that the metal bracket actually allows the drip pump to sit away from the kennel door securely. I have been informed from a number of practices that other pumps sit at a slant on the kennel doors meaning they are unsecure and potentially unsafe.

We then move onto the interface of the pump, a very smart touch screen. Practices are always commenting during demonstrations when I have been wearing PPE gloves, that you can still effectively use the touch screen. There is no need for ‘hard-prodding’ as I like to describe it best, which, if you have ever used McDonald’s self-service machine, can be quite annoying!

Coming from a non-clinical background it really is amazing how simple and easy this pump is. Another key feature that makes this pump so simple but also unique is the fact it can be calibrated in house. This means that you can calibrate any of your giving sets by yourself and therefore you do not need to send them off for this to be done.

Calibration takes no longer than 5 minutes and means all of your giving sets are compatible.  As you can imagine this saves a lot of time and hassle as well as costs!

If we look at other drip pumps that are available on the market you will notice that the Enmind is very competitively priced at £595, and in some cases is cheaper than other older style pumps. For example the VetPro 2000 infusion pump, which is priced between £690 and £750.

Another great feature that differs the Enmind from other pumps is the vertical giving set insertion. This helps to reduce the number of bubbles as gravity is automatically your side. Pumps that work with a horizontal giving set insertion quite commonly find bubbles an issue.

The Enmind also features a sequence mode – this is designed to automatically run from one rate to another. For example the pump can be set to a surgical rate for a specific amount of time, once this time is up it will automatically change to a different rate such as maintenance. The pump can be set to up to 5 different rates. For practices I have found to be one of the biggest advantages because more often than not trying to remember to change rates can be difficult – especially with everything else going on!

To summarise this fantastic piece of equipment in three words I would say: SMALL, EFFECTIVE & SIMPLE. It really is a great way to revolutionise a practice without any hassle.
