HP cheek tooth bur - 6mm diameter, TC (tungsten carbide)
This bur was designed for grinding dental acrylic resin. It has fine, cross-diagonal blades made from tungsten carbide (TC) which enable rapid, smooth and efficient grinding.
The bur is parallel sided and dome ended with a diameter of 6mm.The bur has an HP shank which is used in a straight dental handpiece or a slow hand piece with a Doriot fitting.
The large diameter means that if soft tissue is accidentally contacted it will graze the tissues and is unlikely to cause great trauma by “wrapping” soft tissue around the bur.
Uses
- Grinding down the cheek teeth in rabbits and rodents with constantly erupting cheek teeth (e.g. Guinea Pigs & Chinchillas).
- To reduce the height of the clinical crown of the cheek teeth and to level the occlusal table.
- The bur is a little too large for use in mouths of animals of less than 1kg body weight - however a smaller diameter bur is not manufactured
- The bur has to be used without water. Frictional heat can damage the teeth and blunt the bur. To minimise heat production use a light pressure and only short contact time with each tooth.
- Use a wooden (e.g. lollipop stick or split tongue depressor) or metal spatula in conjunction with the bur. The spatula acts as a soft tissue retractor and guard. It also guides the bur onto the teeth by advancing the bur into the mouth along the spatula’s surface.
- Trim the more rostral teeth first and progress into the mouth. If much reduction is required, grind the teeth for a short time, move to another quadrant and then return to the tooth.
- During use, the bur should be periodically cleaned with a brass bur brush to remove tooth debris. A clogged bur will not cut well.
- After use, the bur should be thoroughly cleaned and then sterilized and afterwards kept dry. Sterilising can be by autoclave or immersion in a cold sterilising solution designed for burs which is non corrosive (e.g. Rusnon).
- If the bur is damp or wet for prolonged periods it will deteriorate and become blunt rapidly and will need replacing. Always use a sharp bur for quicker grinding with less frictional heat generation.
