Oscillometric Monitoring: Fast, Reliable BP Readings at Your Fingertips

Vet Direct’s Technical Know-How series is designed to empower veterinary professionals with practical, expert-led guidance on using clinical equipment effectively.

This blog on oscillometric blood pressure monitoring is part of a series curated by our Field Based Technical Support RVN, Michelle Richmond DipAVN (Medical & Surgical), CertVN ECC, RVN, whose 30+ years of experience in practice and education bring depth and clarity to every recommendation. Backed by our Technical Team, this guide helps you navigate the nuances of oscillometric technology to ensure accurate, stress-free readings in your veterinary practice.

What Is Oscillometric BP Monitoring?

It is a non-invasive technique using high-tech devices to provide analysis. This method detects oscillations in the arterial wall during cuff inflation and deflation. A transducer converts these into digital signals, providing systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressure at the push of a button.

When to Use Oscillometric Devices:

  • Routine check-ups
  • Anaesthesia monitoring
  • Sedated procedures
  • Post-operative care

Cuff Placement Guidelines

Correct cuff selection and limb position should be carefully considered to prevent erroneous results. The cuff chosen needs to have a width of approximately 40% in dogs and 30% in cats of the total circumference of the patient’s limb/ tail.

  • Place proximal to carpus, hock, or tail base
  • Ensure correct cuff size and secure placement
  • Patient must remain still for accurate readings

Repeat Readings & Trend Monitoring

While oscillometric devices are designed for convenience, repeat readings are still recommended to ensure accuracy. Monitoring trends over time is far more clinically useful than relying on isolated values. Oscillometric monitors often include memory functions, allowing you to track changes and support long-term patient care.

Limitations

  • In conscious patients the oscillometric readings can be hindered by movement, resulting in artefacts.
  • Can be challenging to obtain a reading in very small patients and can be considered less accurate
