Make Polyform-F Granules – the heart of your formaldehyde spill kit
Formaldehyde / Formalin as everyone who has worked with this is a hazards and dangerous product – has now been thrown in to the spotlight with a massive 600%+ reduction in exposure limits – moving from 2ppm to 0.3ppm for short and long term exposure, which is enforceable in the EU from July 2021.
That is just 3 parts per 10 Million!
Therefore, we now need to ensure we work extremely carefully around this product – which is still used in veterinary practice due to there being no alternative fixer for preparing histopathological samples.
Therefore, with this in mind a spill could potentially put you and your team at risk.
We therefore recommend that you have a specific spill regime and kit for formaldehyde products. Polyform-F can be used to sprinkle over and around a spill and after leaving for 12-15 minutes renders the spill safe!
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
This document must be read in conjunction with the COSHH Assessments for Formaldehyde and the COSHH Assessment for Polyform-FTM granules.
• When clearing any spillage, always ensure you do not endanger yourself.
• Large spills (5 litres) or more of Formaldehyde MUST be cleared by Emergency Services
• If safe to clear the spillage ensure you are wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Evacuate area of all unnecessary personnel
• Eliminate all sources of ignition in the area of the spill and ventilate to air wherever possible
• Add Polyform-F™ around the perimeter of the spill to dike the liquid and prevent spreading
• Cover the entire area from edge to edge at a ratio of approximately one-to-one, completely covering the spill and taking care to avoid creating vapours and splashing
• Once Polyform-F™ is applied, allow to stand for 12 to 15 minutes - Do Not Mix
• Clean up spill residue by using a plastic dust-pan and disposable towels, then place the collected spill residue in a black bin bag
• Polyform-F™ treated spill residue may be disposed of as non-hazardous, municipal waste – unless the Formaldehyde has been in contact with animal tissue, when it must be disposed of as hazardous waste via licenced contractor.
• After the spill residue has been removed from the spill area, wipe up the spill area with cold tap water, using paper towel, sponge or mop.
• The spill area can then be cleaned with a detergent solution
