This new invention is so good that it will challenge our current knowledge of blood pressure, and not only in veterinary circles.
The Memo Diagnostic (MD) has been built utilising the latest components to exacting standards to enable High Definition Oscillometry (HDO) allowing in-depth monitoring and analysis of Oscillometric pulse waves, which can be viewed on screen when linked to a PC or stored on a USB key for future analysis. The measurement data and related average value display can be stored on file, which can even be e-mailed for further expert analysis and also printed out.
Using the very latest microprocessor and technological components means that this system is “head and shoulders” above other current units on the market. The patented technology and upgradeable software also means it will remain there for years to come.
The system uses the latest fastest computer processors 32 Bit (compared to 8 Bit - all other current models), specifically developed electronically controlled valves (the only ones in the world) designed to be accurate over 5-300mmHg (compared to 70-160mmHg - which are used in all other current models) and a new veterinary specific “linearity” algorithm for interpretation and artefact removal (all others currently use adapted human data).
The use of this latest technology allows the system to analyse and record data in microseconds (10,000 calculations per second), which means that the unit is:
- Fast
- Sensitive
- Accurate
- Simple Use
Fast and dependable measurements of the blood pressure (SysD, DiaD,MAP) and the pulse rate (up to 500 bpm) and can be taken in 10 seconds.
The cuffs and sensors now detect pulse vibrations in rats’ arteries and can measure pulse rates over 500bpm. This sensitivity is therefore effortlessly capable of measuring cats BP from cuffs placed below the elbow and on the tail; sensors are 10,000X more sensitive than the human ear leading to non-subjective repeatable readings.
The real-time scanning can be visualised on a PC screen and each individual wave can be monitored. The algorithm is designed to capture all of the relevant data and to ignore all pre-programmed artefacts. The system has been shown to correlate significantly with the current "gold standard" invasive techniques.
As long as some basic principals are observed – anyone can get meaningful readings using this unit - in cats and dogs. An equine unit will also be available in the next 6 months.

With this development it is now easy to routinely screen blood pressure – early detection is good medicine and allows you to investigate and manage the disease.
By monitoring patients who are prescribed hypotensive drugs, the MD can allow you to optimise the dose – this is especially advantageous for pets where chronic drug use is expected.
The MD is ideal for anaesthesia. There is a loop function on all units to allow periodic monitoring during surgery. You can monitor for hypotension in shock or haemorrhaging patients: hypertension during anaesthesia is also an indicator of pain.
Diseases that are associated with hypertension
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Renal diseases
- Diseases of the central nervous system
- Ophthalmologic changes
- Obesity
- Metabolic imbalance, such as
- Hyper- and hypothyreosis
- Morbus Cushing
- Diabetes mellitus
Indications for blood pressure measurement
- Routine screening methods/ age check
- Diseases associated with hypertension
- Hypotonic emergencies (shock, trauma, pericardial perfusion, poisoning, Addison crisis, changes in the ECG, bradyarrhythmia AV block, atrial standstill etc.)
- Monitoring of intensive care patients
- Monitoring of therapies using medicaments that influence the blood pressure (ACE blockers, ß-
blockers, CA antagonists, ...)
- Preparation and monitoring of anesthesia
Blood Pressure is a vital health parameter. By detecting hypotension early you can prevent target organ damage (heart, eye, kidney, CNS) associated with a variety of diseases. Ownership of this diagnostic tool will assure improved services to both pet and client.
This unit will rapidly become indispensable in your clinic.
As the system is easy to use and results repeatable it is also excellent for nurse clinics or as an optional service during health visits.
Screening of blood pressure is good medicine with high owner acceptance. By providing a new and rapid service you will also increase revenues.
